PAUL WOZNEY « » : I rise today in solidarity with the 71 skilled workers whose livelihoods were stripped from them with the closure of Ubisoft Halifax, just weeks after their studio voted to unionize. These 71 employees are talented producers, programmers, artists, and researchers. They were building an emerging industry in Halifax, and this government, for all its talk of strengthening our economy, failed them. When we allow a publicly subsidized company to walk away from Nova Scotian workers exercising their right to unionize, it demonstrates to Nova Scotians that they don’t have that right.
There are many who feel that this government’s silence represents a stand with predatory business rather than with workers. This government should be ashamed for pushing an austerity budget on Nova Scotians while letting a multi-national corporation run off with millions of taxpayers’ dollars scot-free. This government says it wants to attract skilled work to our province, but I count 71 big reasons they’re letting us down.
