Paul Wozney, MLA Sackville-Cobequid

Father, teacher, coach. Proudly serving Lower Sackville in #nslegislature

It’s easy to look to bigger cities and provinces elsewhere in Canada when we think of where history is made, but Davis Day in the greater Sydney area in NS reminds us that every day NSians have left their imprint on the lives we all live today.

101 years ago, William Davis, along with fellow coal miners, confronted Besco leadership to demand the company restore water and electricity to their community, a tactic Besco used to wage war on miners striking to oppose wage cuts of 33%, unsafe working conditions and inhumane hours.

Standing the gaff, Davis was murdered by gunfire from Besco hired police and NS provincial police. Others were wounded but lived.

Davis became an international symbol of the struggle of workers whose lives, income and working conditions were all playthings of greedy corporations driven by profit and inspired unionized people across Canada and the world to fight for justice in the workplace.

As labour critic, it is an honour to celebrate and honour Davis, his family and the community that stood around him in this struggle, and to continue the his fight for justice for working people in NS.
Thanks to Literacy Justice Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Teachers Union for joining me yesterday to speak about cuts to supports that help kids succeed in school.

At a time when Nova Scotian students are struggling to read and write, the Houston government is cutting school support staff like literacy and math coaches. This is deeply out of touch with what students, parents, and teachers are feeling on the ground. We all need to be working to ensure children can succeed both in school and later in life.
Our friends at @kinsmensackville know how to put on a superb community event that supports the life changing work others do!

Yesterday’s Rods to Wheels Car Show featured close to 200 amazing cars, hot rods, race cars and antique vehicles, and proceeds from the event went to support the research and advocacy @mscanadaofficial does.

Congratulations to all category winners, and many thanks to all the exhibitors for sharing your incredible rides with Sackville as part of making life with MS more treatable and bringing a cure closer! ❤️
Any day you get to spend with a special Olympian is a TOP DAY. 💪🏻🏆❤️

It was a thrill to welcome athletes from Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Sackville yesterday morning to Metropolitan Field to open the 34TH Annual Regional @specialons Special Olympics Track and Field Meet. Over 200 athletes competed in several events to determine representation at the Provincial Games, held in Antigonish each summer.

Anyone who questions whether good remains in the world of sports need only share an hour with athletes like these- they’re all in to do their best in EVERY attempt, and they’re ALSO all in to cheer those competing with them to do THEIR best, even when it means others win the medal. Heart, hustle, dedication, and incredible sportspersonship on display in every attempt in every event- it’s deeply moving and inspiring.

Kudos to the Knights of Columbus and Sackville Kinsmen and Kinettes and the Calais Branch Legion Colour Guard for their volunteer support that helps these games possible and affordable for amazing athletes and families.

Thanks for the invitation to join you all- congrats on another successful meet, and best of luck to event winners moving on to Provincials! 🥇☘️
Happy Pride Month Nova Scotia!

Pride is a month-long celebration of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and of those who struggled for its rights. It’s also a reminder of the importance of continued advocacy for queer and trans folks.

No matter who you are, you deserve to be safe, included, and supported. At a time where hate towards the 2SLGBTQIA+ community is rising, attending the many pride events across Nova Scotia this month is a fantastic way to show your support for your neighbours, friends and family.
It’s an honour to be present for the HMCS Sackville Navy League Corps annual Ceremonial Inspection.

The opportunity to celebrate the year round hard work and dedication of cadets to band and drilling is a joy, especially seeing the pride cadets, the staff and volunteers who organize and lead, and the parents and families who faithfully support them all exhibit at this milestone community event.

Special salute to the cadets honoured with specific recognitions, and many thanks to chapter President Julie Briand for the kind invitation! Well done all. 🏆⚓️
