For those new to parenting or new to parenting in Nova Scotia, Nova Village NS is hosting a parent education program in two sessions on November 24 and 26, from 5:30 to 7:30pm! You can find these sessions and Fairview Family Support themselves at 6 Titus Street, Halifax.

Childcare, transportation, translators, and food provided!

The sessions will cover a number of topics ranging from safety and wellbeing to childcare, and health and wellness to family violence. They'll also discuss useful community resources for families to access. You can register or refer a family by getting in touch with Madi at (902) 443 - 9569 ext. 106 or via email at mgebreysus@novavillagens.com - registration is open until November 10th!
On Tuesday night, Sackville's Kinettes kindly allowed me to join a meeting, and I presented three of their members with certificates commemorating their recent introduction to the legislature.

This was the least I could do for their warm welcome and for contributing so much good to Sackville! I hope to see these wonderful folks again soon.

To see the recording of my statement in their honour, check out my website - link in bio!
Today, November 3rd, is the last day to submit your thoughts/concerns regarding the proposed expansion of the Mount Uniacke Quarry!

Residents' concerns have yet to be addressed by the Houston government, including by their own Progressive Conservative MLAs, despite wanting nothing more than to be heard during a process that could change their back yard forever.

You can easily submit your thoughts to the Department of Environment and Climate Change at the link in my bio!
We had an incredible group of volunteers come out to support our Day of Action!

Thank you to all you folks in Sackville who took the time to chat about power and home heating. Your support means the world! We'll be back on the doorstep in no time.

What’s happening right now in Alberta hits close to home.

Early Tuesday morning, Premier Danielle Smith used the notwithstanding clause to order tens of thousands of striking teachers back to work – a chilling reminder of when Nova Scotia teachers were legislated back to work in 2017 by the then-Liberal government.

Nova Scotia’s teachers know what it’s like to have their voices silenced and their right to bargain overridden. No government should use its powers to trample on the rights of the people who make our schools and communities stronger.

To the striking teachers in Alberta: we see you, we hear you, and we stand with you.
Since Tim Houston was elected, power bills have increased by $400 per year. Now, to add insult to injury, his government has cut 46,000 people off of home heating assistance.

We don't plan on standing by while the government makes Nova Scotia unlivable. Join me and an excellent group of volunteers this Saturday for a DAY OF ACTION to rein in Nova Scotia Power and reverse Tim Houston's devastating cuts to the Heating Assistance Rebate Program.

We'll be knocking on doors in Sackville from 10:30am - 12:00pm on November 1st. Meet us at 445 Sackville Drive and help us bring down the cost of living! #nspoli #nsndp
Last week, I was proud to stand alongside long-term care and home support workers who have been fighting for fair wages and respect for far too long.

These workers care for our parents and grandparents, yet the Houston government continues to leave them without a contract. Chronic understaffing, low pay, and cancelled bargaining dates are pushing the senior care sector to the breaking point.

Tim Houston promised to fix health care, but the people who hold the system together are being left behind. It’s time for this government to get back to the table and deliver the fair deal these workers deserve.
It’s a privilege to be with delegates from unions affiliated with the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour for the opening of the NSFL Biennial Convention.

It’s also special to be present for the final address of outgoing NSFL President, Danny Cavanaugh, with whom I served workers in this province from 2018 thru 2022. He has been a champion for working people and union members, and someone I humbly call friend- thank you Danny, and all my best to you in your well deserved retirement.

Looking forward to spending time over the next three days with delegates, and to working with officers elected during the Convention to advocate for and realize change that lifts the working people of our province and strengthen the services we all rely on as Nova Scotians.

Solidarity!
You can access the Mobile Primary Care Clinic at the Cobequid Community Health Centre on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 4pm!

While the Mobile Clinic is not a replacement for primary care, they may be able to help you with prescriptions, minor injuries, infections, and common illnesses. Find them on the first floor at 40 Freer Lane every weekend!
Metropolitan Field was ROCKING today for the Annual @kinsmensackville Community Bowl, which raises funds to support youth pursuing post secondary studies in our community.

Tip of the cap to the athletes from our hometown @sackvillehighschool football Kingfishers and the visiting @avonview_ football Avalanche for a spirited game. Both teams set aside some mid game controversy to end the tilt on sportsmanlike terms, having shown a lot of heart. Congrats to SHS on taking the trophy home! 💪🏻🏆

SHS also swept the best of three halftime tug of war. 🏆

Humbled for the invite to walk out as part of the Honour Guard with Sackville Beaverbank @scoutscanada colour guard, Sackville’s Town Crier, HRM District 15 @councillorbillygillis, @kinsmensackville President Todd North and fellow exec members to help kick things off.
It was a treat to join our @sackvillerivers friends for their annual fundraising banquet and silent auction at the @kinsmensackville centre on First Lake Drive.

A sold out banquet helped raise money through a 50/50 draw ($350 to the winner!), raffles for WestJet flight for 2 package, $100 cash and lots of amazing silent auction items, all in support of the incredible education, conservation and trail management the Sackville Rivers Association and its board and volunteers carry out each year.

Thanks for the invite- glad to be with you all and partner in the valuable work you do throughout the year. Congrats on a brilliant evening!
Did you know that Canada only began to legally recognize SOME women as “persons” less than 100 years ago?

After decades of women’s suffrage activism, the law finally treated (mostly white) women like men under the law when it came to voting, property ownership and other cornerstone aspects of life on October 18, 1929.

It would take decades more for Indigenous, Inuit and Métis and Black and Brown women to receive equivalent legal recognition.

On #PersonsDay, we celebrate the decades of courage that women and allies sustained to win change— and the women and allies who continue to fight for gender equity today.
Happy Thanksgiving! Wishing you all a happy fall season and a day filled with good food and good company.
Today is the International Day of the Girl. Around the world and at home, scores of girls face poor access to education, high rates of intimate partner violence, and self harm.

The International Day of the Girl is a time to reflect on how we can amplify girls' voices and improve their lives at home and abroad.
Happy National Coming Out Day!

For every person who expresses who they are, the world gets a bit better. Today is a day to celebrate our 2SLGBTQI+ friends and family and to offer love and support no matter where somebody is in their journey with their identity.

While today’s announcement that changes to certification renewals and reduction to certification fees provide some mild relief for skilled tradespeople at a time where cost of living pressures (rent, utilities, groceries) continue to rise unchecked by Tim Houston’s government, skilled tradespeople have made clear to us that they need housing and income support for apprentices and early career tradespeople doing coursework far from home.

NS’s outdated overtime laws means either backbreaking hours for two weeks or no overtime at all for apprentices, taking hundreds out of workers’s pockets each month.

Labour standards don’t ensure plumbed restroom facilities on worksites either, creating barriers for gender diverse apprentices and tradespeople already facing uphill battles in a long time male dominated sector.

While we welcome these modest changes by government, it’s a shame that Tim Houston and Nolan Young rushed out of the legislature while Bills I and the NDP put on the table to address these needs went on hold, putting apprentices and workers facing huge obstacles in an even tougher situation as rent, utilities and cost of living rise to levels worse than Toronto.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Email your MLA to support our legislation to make overtime fair and provides plumbed restrooms on every worksite for constructions workers!
Down to the wire! Our legislative session ended on Friday, but I was so pleased to include a statement in honour of Beacon House on the last day.

If you're not familiar, Beacon House operates a shelter, food bank, and thrift store. They all operate under the same guiding principle - that neighbours need to help neighbours to make a community strong. They have secured housing for 78 people in the past 12 months, served 5588 clients at their food bank, and across their sites have amassed a volunteer force of over 200.

Pictured here alongside me: CEO Mel Roberts, Shelter Coordinator Joe Deagle, Board Member (and previous tenant of the office) Steve Craig, and volunteers Don Bruschett and Alvina Baker. Thank you all for your life-saving work!
