Paul Wozney, MLA Sackville-Cobequid

Father, teacher, coach. Proudly serving Lower Sackville in #nslegislature

Folks in Sackville spoke loud and clear today: it’s not enough for the Premier to feel betrayed by NS Power as it continues to hike rates at levels that far outpace wages every year, all for service that grows less reliable over time.

Hardworking families and folks living on fixed incomes deserve legislation that acts decisively to protect them from rates NS Power imposes to pay shareholders guaranteed dividends.

They’re also clear that legislation to hold NS Power to account for the data breach that has a staggering number of NSians watching their bank accounts and personal credit round the clock because the credit monitoring offered will expire soon and just isn’t working.

A big thank you to everyone we spoke with on doorsteps to sign our petition. We look forward to tabling your support for action by Tim Houston and his supermajority that protects people over profits when the legislature resumes this week.
TODAY! Come out and spread the word with us that Nova Scotians won't wait any longer - the Houston government needs to fix Nova Scotia's out-of-control power bills and protect us from data breaches!
Nova Scotian's power bills have gone up by $400 per year since Tim Houston was elected. Worse, our province has recently been the victim of a preventable and disastrous data breach at NSP.

This Saturday, join us for your chance to advocate with the NS NDP and tell Tim Houston that we need lower bills, more protection, and above all ACTION from his government which hasn't delivered on fixing Nova Scotia Power.
See below for a list of relief options for folks affected by the Hanwell Drive fire.

Sackville's generosity never ceases to amaze. Our community has geared up fast to support those who lost their homes over the weekend, and there are ample opportunities to help out. If you or somebody you know needs support, or if you're able to give, please consider visiting the below organizations. Feel free to comment any other services you think folks could use right now, and keep making Sackville the best community out there.

Encounter Church of the Salvation Army (collecting non-perishable food, hygiene products, gift cards - hygiene products are needed most urgently) - 51 Metropolitan Ave., Lower Sackville

Hospice Thrift Store (offering gift cards for their store for those in need) - 32 Glendale Ave., Lower Sackville

Springfield Lake Rec Centre (still accepting donations and providing hot meals/coffee, and will be open until 8pm tonight - Red Cross is still at the site, so they encourage affected folks who haven't already to register there) - 266 Lakeview Ave., Lower Sackville
Blending career fair, job fair, and networking event, The Great Connection Extravaganza is coming to Lower Sackville's Royal Canadian Legion Calais Branch 162!

On Monday September 22nd, from 1:30pm to 4:00pm, talent seekers and job seekers alike will have the opportunity to connect with representatives from a wide range of industries. If you are interested in an exhibitor space, please email employers@opportunityplace.ca to book yours before spaces run out!
The next sitting of the House of Assembly is approaching fast (September 23rd!) - but you can still sign our petition to expand the Cobequid Community Health Centre at the link in my bio!

In 2022, Tim Houston promised to expand emergency care, extend emergency hours, create inpatient capacity and expand the range of outpatient services our rapidly expanding community needs. His government committed the funding to achieve these improvements too.

And yet, four years later, no improvements are underway or expected, and whatever changes are under consideration are locked up in central planning for the QEII redevelopment. On top of that, Tim Houston’s government isn’t willing to be transparent about when the promised work will begin.

We’re not asking for new money or new projects. We’re calling on the Premier to keep the word already given to us. As the fastest growing community in Nova Scotia over the past decade, we need promises to become action when it comes to healthcare.
Today I took the opportunity to represent Pink Day while bringing my Cobequid Health Centre petition door-to-door. I couldn't pass on an opportunity to represent two good causes at once!

We're fast approaching a new legislative session where we'll present hundreds of signatures to the Premier, so if you haven't signed onto the petition yet, find it in my bio!
Last night I was humbled to support the Sackville Walk to Remember, a grassroots event organized by families surviving the loss of a loved one to death by suicide.

It was moving to watch families and their networks join together to honour the lives of special people and stand together to advocate for change that is needed to prevent anyone else from making this choice.

I’m proud to work with our community in partnership with groups and my friend and partner @councillorbillygillis, and folks like former councillor and MLA Steve Craig. Sackville is a special place where everyday people, seeing a need, rise together to care and change our world for the better. Looking forward to continuing this important work with Barbie and her team in the years to come.
Today’s observance of 9/11 happens as we all seek to process the murder of Charlie Kirk.

It’s worth sitting with the question of what enduring lessons and impressions we took away from the horror that hit New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania all those years ago.

For some, their focus has never left the fear of organized hatred and fighting it with violence and aggression.

For me? I remember how Halifax and Newfoundland opened their hearts and homes to stranded strangers in response to hate and fear. In a moment the attackers intended to polarize society and inspire western society to implode, many of us chose to care for people who needed help simply because they needed it.

As we wrestle with what Kirk’s murder means, we find ourselves in another moment where we have the choice to wrap care around hurting people because they need it, especially if they feel and believe differently than we do. The humanity we show to others who feel their humanity valued is the most powerful response to the kind of hatred Kirk invested his life in sowing.

We defeat hate by loving those it makes little logical sense to reach out to. Love befuddles that hate and rewires broken mindsets.

So, as much as I oppose everything Charlie Kirk stood for and promoted, I send care to everyone grieving his loss. We have more to unite us in common than we do to remain divided.

Let’s hold on to the enduring lessons we learned on 9/11 so long ago and apply them in this moment in response to the tragedies that hate insists on inflicting on us all.

After an email to Dal students last night stating publicly that the Dal Board “welcomed” the resumption of bargaining talks with the @dalfacultyassoc bargaining team in advance of conciliation talks beginning Monday, @dalhousieu President Kim Brooks refused to accept a letter co-signed by more than 500 members with updated asks. The locked out faculty were literally locked out from delivering their letter in front of their eyes.

As Advanced Education Critic and Labour and Skills Critic, on behalf of the @novascotiandp, I call on the Dal Board to abandon the duplicitous messaging and tactics and return to good faith bargaining to reach a free, fair deal that avoids serious harms to student learning this semester. It’s far past time to #keepdalstrong
While the Houston government has opened new builds and modular classrooms in other communities on time in the past couple of years, students at St. Joseph’s Alexander McKay Elementary residing in a predominantly Black neighborhood in North End Halifax are heading back to school for the third straight year on busses to an out of area location after its opening was delayed yet again.

@brendanmaguirens, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, fought hard for a fast build of the new JL Isley in his riding that leapfrogged the provincial new school capital list, a win he has campaigned for re-election on more than once.

Yet the Minister only offers excuses about supply chain issues and labour shortages to justify the SJAM rebuild delays which continue to force children out of area and deprive them of programs and supports community provided at their local school.

He should show the same fight for all communities needing school builds and refreshes he showed in his own riding.

It’s time for the Minister to end the secretive school planning process condemned by the Auditor General this spring and deliver the timely completion of the SJAM rebuild for a community finding it impossible to get answers or transparency about.
🤠There’s no question that Sackville is country music country!🤠

Marching in solidarity with fellow union siblings on Labour Day in Halifax has been a staple for me and my kids for over a decade, so it was an honour to greet and encourage union leaders, members and activists this year as official opposition critic for Labour, Skills and Immigration.

Labour Day means honouring the fights won by siblings in the past- for things like minimum wage, paid holidays, parental and maternity leaves, recent wins like recognition of psychological workplace injuries and leave for survivors of intimate partner violence. Working people have improved the world for all.

But it’s also a day to renew our resolve for justice in the workplace and the world, right here and now.

Working people are the vanguard voices and organizers for justice and peace for the Palestinian people, for justice and equality for Indigenous, Inuit and Métis peoples, African Nova Scotians, the 2SLGTBQIA+ community, newcomers.

Working people continue to power workplace democracy and justice- Air Canada @cupe_scfp flight attendants just won a major victory over unpaid labour. @dalfacultyassoc members continue to resist an unjust lockout intended to suppress wages and teaching and learning conditions in a time of surplus. @uniforcanada and @cupwsttp members pushed against federal government abuse of labour code provisions to break legal strike actions.

My concept of leadership was forged by my union. I and @novascotiandp stand with workers in the continued fight for free, fair wages and workplaces, and for a just, peaceful world for all. Solidarity!
Happy Labour Day!

First celebrated in Halifax in 1888, Canada's Labour Day originated in the work action and mass parades of the workers' rights movement in the 1870s and 1880s. The tradition of the parade stems in large part from The Nine-Hour Leagues, which fought for a nine-hour work day in the early 1870s and turned their strikes into mobile demonstrations on public streets.

Fought for and won by the power of working people, its continued celebration proves the pride and determination of Canadian workers.

For this holiday and the countless improvements to working conditions of the past two centuries, thank unions and the dedicated workers behind them!
Today is Overdose Awareness Day, a reminder that overdoses are preventable, and that more supports for those suffering from addiction are a necessity.

If you haven't already, learn the signs of overdose and take advantage of the provincial Take Home Naloxone Program.
In the face of news that Dal management asked @dalfacultyassoc to withdraw all non-salary proposals to access arbitration on salary articles, spirits remain high to reach a deal through a return to collective bargaining.

Solidarity continues to pour in from across Canada and the labour movement to support locked out faculty, librarians and other staff vital to student learning.

@novascotiandp joins our voices with Dal faculty to management to set aside hardline tactics and resume bargaining in good faith. That’s where solutions will be found that everyone can live with. #keepdalstrong
