The Legislature sat for just 8 days this fall, meaning Tim Houston's government was able to push through laws with hardly any debate.

Spring Sitting Recap: Standing Up for Sackville-Cobequid

Fighting for improvements at the Cobequid Community Health Centre

During the spring sitting of the Nova Scotia Legislature, my first as the MLA for Sackville-Cobequid, one of my major focuses was pushing for progress on the Cobequid Community Health Centre. When I asked the Minister of Health about the Premier’s commitment to expand and improve this critical local facility, we learned that the three-year-old promise is still on hold, tied up in the planning of the QEII redevelopment.

That’s simply not good enough for Sackville-Cobequid residents who deserve timely, quality health care close to home. To keep pressure on the government, we’ve launched a petition that will run all summer and be presented in the Legislature this fall. Every signature helps demand better healthcare for our community. If you see us at your door, we’d love your support!

Protecting Sackville-Cobequid from risky mining and fracking

Many of you have shared concerns about the province suddenly lifting bans on fracking and uranium exploration. The Premier has argued that these industries are key to economic growth, but I and the NDP caucus believe pushing ahead without real consultation is irresponsible.

Now that it’s clear there is no business case to mine uranium here in Nova Scotia, it’s time to reconsider this rushed legislation. I’ll continue to stand with Sackville-Cobequid residents who want thoughtful, transparent decisions about our environment and economy.

Working to secure affordable housing

While the provincial budget does include support for building more housing, what’s missing is stable, core funding for non-market housing that working people in Sackville-Cobequid can actually afford for the long term.

That’s why we fought to introduce legislation and budget amendments to prioritize these options. Affordable, secure homes are the foundation of strong communities, and I’ll keep pushing until this becomes a real priority for our province.

Addressing traffic and public works needs in Sackville-Cobequid

Highway 102 traffic continues to grow, leading to increased costs and longer commutes. In July, I’ll be meeting with the Minister of Public Works to discuss solutions, and I want to bring ideas straight from Sackville-Cobequid residents to the table.

Beyond roads, our growing community is also feeling the squeeze when it comes to recreation spaces. Ice time, gym, dance, arts, and meeting facilities are all under pressure. That’s why I’m collaborating with HRM Councillors Billy Gillis and John Young, MP Braeden Clark, and local community leaders to explore opportunities to build, expand, and improve Sackville-Cobequid infrastructure. Together, we can ensure residents of all ages have what they need to live healthy, connected lives.
