By the time you read this, high school and middle school students will have wrapped their final exams and major end of year assessments and graduation ceremonies will have wrapped up.
As a lifelong teacher, I know that this time of year is truly special for school staff. Every September marks the start of a new chapter, offering fresh opportunities and challenges for both new and familiar faces. Students and staff pour their hearts throughout the year into reaching goals that shape the future of our communities. Every June brings us moments to look back, to celebrate and to honour how far students have come, and to watch them spread the wings that will carry them into their tomorrows.
For students and families, this is a season of reflection and excitement. Celebrating milestones reminds us that we often achieve our best when surrounded by a supportive community committed to our success—a vital lesson for youth to carry into their careers and families.
For school staff, the feeling is bittersweet. It is a joy to watch the students you’ve invested so much time in cross the stage toward wide-open horizons, even as you feel the loss of their daily presence in the classroom. We happily wave them toward their bright futures while knowing we’ll miss their light in our lives.
I want to thank the dedicated staff who lift up our youth. You are an unquestioned backbone of our community, performing transformative work that is often unseen but always essential. We are grateful for your leadership. I wish you an entirely deserved, restful summer that renews your energy, and your passion.
I urge students and families to take a moment to express their gratitude. Unlike the visible progress of a construction project at the end of a workday or a month, the impact of teaching is often hard to see. A simple note or card sharing a moment of impact can sustain the educators who make our futures brighter. Trust me when I tell you that an encouraging word charges school staff’s batteries like nothing else!
I wish everyone celebrating graduations the very best after a long school year. As the weather warms, I hope you enjoy the sunshine, the beaches, and the simple joy of a summer barbecue. Enjoy your break and have some fun- you deserve it.
To the adults: let’s each do our part to keep our community safe. Please slow down while driving as children head outdoors, and always arrange for safe travel when attending gatherings. Let’s ensure every pedestrian, cyclist and driver gets home safely this summer.
I had an incredible time celebrating Canada Day and Sackville Community Days with everyone who came out recently, and I look forward to connecting with you on your doorsteps in the coming weeks. Thank you to the organizers who make our summers in Sackville truly special. That’s the Scoop for June—reach out anytime if we can help!
